I HAD NEVER MET Mick Mulvaney before he became chief of staff, or if I did, I donât remember it. He is of average height and weight, with light-colored hair and round glasses. Like me, he cannot remember anyoneâs name. He is a devout Catholic, loves golf and swimming, has a wicked sense of humor, and was always honest with us. He also has the most amazing wife, Pam. When Mick and the small staff he brought with him started on January 2, 2019, I was not initially impressed. I heard from some that the Mulvaney crew were unprofessional, only wanted to have fun, demanded to see the bunker, and felt that Camp David was their playgroundâa far departure from General Kellyâs style. But as I got to know the Mulvaney team over time, my mind began to change. Not only did every one of them bend over backward to be welcoming and relaxed, they were damn good at policy and staff issues, and their discretion was incredible.
They began by sending emails out on Friday, inviting everyone to stop by the chiefâs office for popcorn and soda. In a place that had been ruled with a military formality for more than a year, that was a breath of fresh air. Mick also had an open-door policy, and if he wasnât available, his principal deputy chief of staff, Emma Doyle, always was. At thirty years old Emma, by the way, was the youngest woman ever to have held that position, which is very impressive considering that she took Mickâs place when he couldnât be around and was charged with continuity of government if some serious shit ever went down.
To me, the best part about Emma was that I never once questioned if she was up for that kind of responsibility. She was always calm, always composed, and pragmatic in the toughest of situations. I could see that the Mulvaney crew were coming into the White House with no predispositions. They genuinely wanted to know and understand everyoneâs roles and what the staff thought worked and what didnât.
